"Love:Son" represents LOVE in all of its forms. While we don't usually think of young boys when we think of love, I felt it important to highlight and juxtapose this (very limiting) belief by focusing the son's portrait on this very theme. The portrait also includes hidden symbols that both support and extend the concept of love: Salat (daily prayer), one of the 5 Pillars of Islam, and triangles (representing a sound, solid foundation).

"Love:Son" is a part of "The Family" Culture Portrait Collection. The original paintings were a part of the "America to Zanzibar" Exhibit at The Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, PA from February 2- September 2, 2019!

This Project Overview Image details the background of the project, commissioning organization and describes the many symbols in the portraits.

The America to ZANZIBAR exhibit is a traveling cultural and experiential exhibit that's coming to the Philadelphia Please Touch Museum from the New York Children's Museum very soon! Custom Arts Studio was selected as an artist-in-residence to create imagery that reflects the Muslim Community, culture and religion in the city of Philadelphia to be exhibited alongside the traveling exhibit. My residency focused on family, the importance of culture and religion in family and how young people experience that religion and culture in their own lives. Get your tickets to this event as it will be a very rich and interactive experience for young and old alike!

Culture Portraits are a signature style coined by Philadelphia artist, Keisha I Make Everything Beautiful Whatley. Blending surrealism, traditional portraiture, technology, and research, Culture Portraits invite the viewer into a visual dialogue of discovery. Depending on canvas size, desired level of storytelling and required research, Culture Portraits take anywhere from 30 to 75+ hours to complete and can be created for any person, client or organization.
